Nadi Vigyan: pulse reading
Pulse diagnosis – An ancient art passed down to the present day.
Nadi Vigyan literally means “pulse reading” and is one of the oldest Ayurvedic methods for identifying an individual’s psychophysical imbalances, identified as Doshas.
Through pulse diagnosis, the Ayurvedic physician perceives the flow of vibrations connected to body and mind, identifying imbalances even before they manifest as symptoms.
Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, “dancing” within the body, create a vital rhythm that is clearly manifested in the pulse. Thanks to Nadi Vigyan, it is possible to perceive the state of the Doshas, identify any aggravations, and their location within the physiology. This diagnosis allows for an understanding of which Dosha is responsible for the malaise, thus guiding a rebalancing path according to the principles of Ayurveda.
Although it may appear simple, Nadi Vigyan is an extremely refined practice that requires great sensitivity and experience. In India, it is said that a true Vaidya must have listened to at least a thousand different pulses to be able to grasp their true nature with certainty.
Since ancient times, to facilitate understanding, the rhythm, amplitude, and frequency of the pulse have been associated with the movements of animals. By “listening” to the blood flow in the artery, it is possible to recognize:
- Vata, with an irregular and empty flow
- Pitta, with a regular and pulsating flow
- Kapha, with a full and slow flow
The prevalence of one of these characteristics indicates the dominance or aggravation of a Dosha.

Ayurvedic diagnosis
The Ayurvedic consultation is an encounter of consciousness and awareness between physician and patient. The physician dedicates time to deeply listening to the person, establishing an empathetic relationship to understand not only the symptoms but the deeper causes of possible physiological imbalances.
The medical history includes an in-depth conversation, observation of daily habits, diet, lifestyle routine, and individual characteristics.
This assessment is accompanied by pulse diagnosis (Nadi Vigyan), integrated with traditional clinical observation. Based on this comprehensive analysis, the Maharishi Ayurveda physician proposes a personalized therapeutic plan, which may include dietary and behavioral guidelines, natural remedies, Ayurvedic supplementation, and suggestions for daily routine. It is not always necessary to resort to a full Panchakarma treatment to maintain or restore an optimal state of health.
